Tyler Perry’s Madea Gets A Job

I’m not a huge fan of Tyler Perry, but it becomes very hard to argue with the success he’s had with his character, Madea, and the family of films his empire has spawned.  He’s been extremely successful and his message films have a built in audience to the tune of $40-50 million per film.  It’s clear that Mr. Perry is clearly doing something right.

Madea-Gets-A-JobI had an opportunity to see his latest production entitled, Madea Gets a Job.  It is actually a video recording of his stage play performed at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center in Atlanta, Georgia on June 6, 2012.  Here is my recommendation: if you can see this movie, if you can rent this movie – do so.  You won’t be disappointed.

The plot is simple. A  judge orders Madea to do 20 hours of community service at a local retirement home. The residents and staff are not ready for Madea’s brand of “the truth,” but you’ll enjoy watching  Madea help the residents of Easy Rest Retirement Home realize the importance of family, love and forgiveness.

This actual live stage performance of Perry’s latest spiritual play is full of music, outstanding singing and Madea’s no nonsense attitude toward life. It was also billed as the last live performance of Perry’s character, Madea.  I can tell you this:  if this is Madea’s last performance, the character goes out on top.  The performers have fun with their roles and struggle hilariously with Perry’s on stage adlibs, of which there are many. Then after watching a very good play, the audience is treated to a great twenty minute music concert starring the performers of the play.

In short, Madea Gets a Job was two hours and twenty minutes of pure joy to me.  I know that Tyler Perry doesn’t appeal to everyone, anymore than Tarantino or Michael Bay do. But if  you watch only one Tyler Perry film this year, make it this one. I had as much fun watching this as the cast did apparently in performing. And that says a lot.
