When the movie Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 opened in May 2017, one the things that people talked about was the incredible opening sequence. The opening sequence and credits set the tone for the movie with a musical opening featuring the song, Mr. Blue Sky by Electric Light Orchestra (ELO). Director James Gunn’s opening was fun, fast paced and set the stage for the rest of the film. It also spawned dozens of parodies of other films using a similar opening credit technique.
While most of the parodies are fun to watch, many miss the point of the Guardians opening sequence. The Guardians’ opening focuses on Baby Groot and his unawareness of the fighting and violence going on around him. The parodies focus primarily on an action fight scene in their respective movies and thus lose the point of the uniqueness of the Gunn directed opening.
That said, I selected a couple of parody clips that I think do justice to the spirit of James Gunn’s opening sequence. First is the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 itself so that we have a baseline. Oh, by the way, I am not responsible for any earworms you get.
1. So, what if the opening to Family Guy was done in the GotG style? Well, YouTube user Fawkes answers that question with Meg and Chris Griffith as Family Guy pays homage to the infamous church fight scene in Kingsman: The Secret Service. No doubt about it, the Griffith kids can take care of themselves. The Family Guy episode is The D in Apartment 23 with the original musical fight soundtrack being Lynyrd Skynrd’s Free Bird. You can see the Family Guy original clip here. You can also see the Kingsman: The Secret Service church scene here (be aware that The Kingsman is extremely violent (as is the Family Guy clip below )).
2. Actor and stunt man, Jackie Chan’s First Strike lends itself perfectly to a GotG opening as YouTube user Jack McDonald Crowley discovered.
3. Finally, Director Tim Miller’s Deadpool’s original opening sequence is already in the vain of GotG and simply can’t be improved upon. I’m including it because it shows how you can make a fight scene the opening credits and have it work.
There are plenty of Guardians of the Galaxy opening sequence parodies out there. You just have to look for them, but they are worth it. Again, beware of the earworm!
