Southern California is known for two things: fire and floods. It’s really easy for some to read the newspaper or watch the devastation on TV and not give too much regard to the human cost of those things. But, rest assured every fire and flood has human impact – and human cost. In 2003, San Diego County experienced a firestorm the likes of which it had not seen in decades. Sadly, there were lives lost and people were maimed and disfigured as they were horribly burned.
There is a wonderful story in the San Diego Union Tribune this morning about Allyson Roach, who got married last week. This young woman was burned over 86% of her body and lost her sister in the firestorm of 2003. This story speaks volumes to the tenacity of the human spirit and brought a smile to my face. Their story is here.
