There’s a game and a book called Six Degrees of Separation. The premise is that anyone on earth can be connected to any other person on the planet through a chain of acquaintances that has no more than five intermediaries. There’s a variation of the game that includes Kevin Bacon (for movies) and Velma, of Scooby Doo fame, for cartoons.
I came across a great Fleetwood Mac site this afternoon and started reading the group biography. (What? Don’t act like you don’t know I’m a FM addict.). I pass the link along to the one or two who might be interested enough to see what I am rambling about, but I say this without fear of contradiction: the blood of classic rock and rock has been touched by the 16 people who have called themselves Fleetwood Mac over the last 40 years.
From Carlos Santana’s “Black Magic Woman” written by Peter Green of Fleetwood Mac to Vince Gill singing with Bekka Bramlett, who sang with FM in 1992, and is the daughter of Delaney Bramlett of Delaney and Bonnie fame, the biographies are fun to read.
But be warned, if you visit the site, you won’t see anything in the biographies that say explicitly that this person formed this group and history was made. But if you know the players, then you’ll know. For example, Bekka Bramlett, leads you back to Delaney & Bonnie & Friends which leads you to Dave Mason who leads you to (Mama) Cass Elliot (of the Mommas & Poppas), Phoebe Snow, Steve Winwood, Traffic and Derek and Dominoes who leads you to Eric Clapton who leads you to Cream, Blind Faith and the Yardbirds who leads you to Jimmy Page and Led Zeppelin. And it goes on. From the Beach Boys, Rod Stewart and Spencer Davis Group to Black Sabbath and the Black Crowes, you can get there through Fleetwood Mac.
And yes, I am lame, but I just think this is so cool. And if you read all 16 bios, you will see that I could have gone DIRECTLY to Dave Mason from FM, but Bekka Bramlett also leads to Billy Joel and for that, she deserved a mention. 😀
