RED – Retired. Extremely Dangerous

No one will ever mistake me for a Bruce Willis fan.  In fact, the last Bruce Willis I saw in the theaters was “Death Becomes Her.”  red-movie-posterYou can probably draw your own conclusions from that on how I initially approached this movie.

Contrary to all the early reviews, in my opinion, this was a fun, rightly paced, action film. Now, it wasn’t lost on me that the theater was lightly filled with most of the audience being over 50, but those in attendance laughed loud and hard and loved this film.

Yes, the plot was somewhat predictable and there were plenty of clichés, but you know what?  I didn’t care.  The cast of this movie made everything believable and that’s what a good cast does.  I strongly disagree with Roger Ebert’s review comment, “This would have been a hell of a cast when we were all younger.”  Frankly, this is a  hell of a cast now!

This film is clearly a Bruce Willis vehicle, but the passengers on his ride were really outstanding. Morgan Freeman is his calm, cool, collected self. Helen Mirren is a bad ass – cut and dry-  and has one of the best lines in the movie when she tells Mary-Louise Parker (Willis’ girl friend) what will happen to her if she breaks Willis’ heart. And John Malkovich plays John Malkovich better than anyone else on the planet.

The bottom line is that this is an enjoyable movie which did not disappoint me. I highly recommend it.
