Peter Capaldi to Leave Doctor Who

Peter Capaldi to Leave Doctor Who

Academy Award winning writer, director and actor, Peter Capaldi announced on 31 January 2017,  that he was leaving the British TV series, Doctor Who, at the end of Peter-Capaldi-as-The-Doctor-in-Doctor-Whothe year. Capaldi said, “I feel it’s time to move on.  I feel sad, I love Doctor Who, it is a fantastic program to work on.”

Sadly, I also feel that it’s time for Mr.  Capaldi to move on as well. When he took over the Doctor Who franchise after Matt Smith, I had high hopes for the series. He is a very talented actor with a remarkable cinematic history and excellent comedic timing. And yet, his Doctor Who was a mean-spirited, self-centered bully. Capaldi’s  Doctor is extremely unlikable and I found myself never able to get vested with his characterization. I’ve never said that before about any Doctor Who actor. As a matter of fact, the only time I thought he showed what the Doctor was really capable of  during his four year run, was in the episode, “The Husbands of River Song.” In that episode, he was the smart, stern, compassionate, funny Doctor that had the best traits of David Tennant and Matt Smith’s portrayal.

The series now has an opportunity to replace the Doctor with a new actor and hopefully, a new direction. The BBC lists some of the actors who could take his place here. It’s a good list and I suspect the franchise will be in good hands. We just have to wait a year to find out.
