Netflix Steps Up Its Game

NetflixBack in January of this year, I mentioned that Netflix had signed a deal involving the Disney library. I also commented that Netflix had inked a deal with Time Warner to start broadcasting/ streaming the studio’s content.

Well, the Time Warner products have started to show up in the Netflix queue and I could not be more surprised or pleased. It turns out that part of the new releases include those from the Time Warner animation studios and Adult Swim.

So starting 1 April 2013, Netflix subscribers can see in addition to Warner Brothers movies:

– Samurai Jack – This highly stylized anime series follows Young Jack, a samurai avenging his father’s murder by the demon Aku, even after he’s thrown into the future.

Codename: Kids Next Door – The Kids Next Door battle the forces that make young lives miserable, like candy-stealing pirates, evil dentists and kids who love homework.

– Batman Beyond – This Bruce Timm animated series revisits a retired Bruce Wayne, who passes the torch — and his costume — on to teen protégé Terry McGinnis.

– Batman: The Brave and the Bold – A very creative interpretation of the Batman saga which finds the Dick Sprang era Caped Crusader teaming up with Green Arrow, Plastic Man and other superheroes to thwart a host of cunning villains. Be sure to watch the award-winning episode: Mayhem of the Music Meister!

– Justice League and Justice League Unlimited – As humanity faces threats from all kinds of new and vile villains, Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman and a dozens of other animated superheroes create a league from which they form small, specialized teams to combat each new menace.

– Robot Chicken – Seth Green’s very funny stop-motion comedy, parody and anarchy are rolled into one in this demented series featuring movie satires, fake ads and other faux-TV programming.

– The Venture Bros. – Teenagers Hank and Dean Venture face off with a string of oddball villains in this parody of the adventure cartoon “Jonny Quest.”

– Ed, Edd ‘n’ Eddy – This animated series follows the misadventures of Ed, Edd and Eddy, three conniving pals who hang around the neighborhood dreaming up new schemes to make money in order to buy more of their favorite candy: jawbreakers.

Camp Lazlo – This series is proof that lightening doesn’t strike twice. Joe Murray’s wonderful creation of Rocko’s Modern Life was pure gold on Nickelodeon. Sadly, even with the same cast, Camp Lazlo was anything but. I include it here because it’s available, but do yourself a favorite and view Rocko’s Modern Life instead (also available on Netflix). It won’t disappoint.

With the Kevin Spacey led House of Cards and new episodes of the highly acclaimed Arrested Development coming to Netflix in May 2013, Netflix is positioning itself to be a real player in the home entertainment arena.
