My FanFic Year-end Review

A repeat Meme from the last couple of years: My Fanfic Year-end Review. However, this year, comments are turned off. Cut to spare those who really don’t care about this kind of stuff. 🙂

Honestly? This is most likely my last “fanfic year-end review.” I was surprised and very disappointed that I wrote only four stories in 2008. It was the fewest pieces authored since I started writing almost four years ago. The fact that I haven’t written anything since June of this year didn’t help. Last year I set a goal of writing three stories.  It was a goal I exceeded, but I’m not happy about it.

I think that most of you who have chosen to read this know I never judge the success of a story by how many reviews it got, but instead – how many times it was read.  In that regard I had some very nice surprises.  I won’t include links to the stories listed here because chances are, if you’re reading this, you’ve already read it (or at least had a chance to). But if you need (or want) to read it again, go to my site to do so because occasionally JL Unlimited or FanFiction.net will mangle a story despite the best efforts of those in charge.  🙂

That said, let’s roll with our very abbreviated review.

Stories longer than 100 words:  4

Favorite story of mine this year: The Demons Inside.  It was a story I’ve been trying to tell for three years. It had a very difficult time getting from my head to its final finished form because of its themes and sexual content. But it is my most read and most reviewed story (across all mediums I publish to) EVER. It is, in fact, my masterpiece in the classical sense of the word.  I am happy to have it be my signature story by which I shall leave the fandom and I am most pleased to have it out there.

Most important story to my personal JL arc this year: The Demons Inside.  Because it contains a idea, purposely buried early in the story, which makes the time travel aspect of the R’Verse unnecessary.  Maybe Static was right, after all: “Sixty-five is the new thirty.”

Story most under appreciated by the rest of the universe, in my opinion: A Day in the Life.   This was a niche story about characters who got a brief mention in a wonderful story I had an opportunity to collaborate with Merlin Missy on.  It wasn’t Justice League. It was “Just Us” Bandits. I liked it, but the rest of the world didn’t care for it too much.

Most fun to write: Courtney’s Complaint. It was about the old being lead by the young. It was a good story and it literally wrote itself.

Finally, my most valuable character this year (as she has really been every year since I started writing) is Shayera Hol. She controls the action (and reaction) of any scene she is in. She is a great character and I hope to have the opportunity to write about her again someday.

No real theme in this year’s stories beyond my standard mantra of “violent people living violent lives.”

Finally, I want to thank Merlin Missy, XFfan_2000 and Angelic Temptress,  who each in her own way encouraged me to continue writing over the years and inspired me to create stories I don’t mind reading again and again. These three wonderful women were the reason I have enjoyed some modest success in this activity. They have my eternal thanks.  🙂
