Megamind is Mega Fun

MegamindToday, I saw Megamind and have to agree with the reviews – this was a good, but not a great movie.  It  has a really excellent cast (more on that later) and the animation was stellar and visually bright enough to keep a 3 year old somewhat interested (more on that later too) for the 90 running time.

The plot is not as original as “How to Train Your Dragon,” but it was good enough to work. The premise is simple. What happens when yin doesn’t have yang to push around anymore? The answer? Yin simply creates another yang, but sometimes with unexpected results.

Make no mistake about it, this movie is a Will Ferrell vehicle. And to be blunt, I am not a Will Ferrell fan by any stretch, but voice acting may be the best showcase for Mr. Ferrell to show his skills in the future. This movie would not have been on my radar at all, had it been a live action movie. That said, the supporting actors were fantastic. But, then when you have a movie featuring Brad Pitt, Tina Fey, David Cross, Ben Stiller and Jonah Hill, you should expect to smile and laugh…and you do. But not as much the previews and trailers would lead you to believe you will.

I will say this, the writers are clearly DCAU fans because I saw shout outs to the 2007 Superman/Doomsday video, the Justice League episodes: “Flash & Substance” and “Hereafter,” and the 1978 Superman movie.  Most importantly, the shout outs worked well and weren’t overly obvious.

I saw this movie with my 3 year granddaughter. It is hard (at least for me) to tell when a 3 year likes a movie, but very easy to tell when they don’t. She sat through it, fidgeted at times and even giggled some times. To me that said more about the movie than anything else I could write.  See it if you get a chance or simply wait until it comes out on HBO. You won’t be disappointed either way.
