On September 4, 2013, the series finale of the very under-rated, but immensely fun animated show Futurama aired and it was delightful. Created by Simpsons creator, Matt Groening, Futurama is the story of a pizza delivery guy who is accidently frozen in 1999 and awaken New Year’s Eve 2999.
In the series finale, the Professor invents a button that can take a person 10 seconds back in time. As Fry and Leela discover 10 seconds can be a lifetime.
Futurama was always a smartly written show having been nominated for 17 Annie Awards and 12 Emmy Awards over its 7 season run. Initially broadcast on Fox from 1999 to 2003, the show found success in reruns on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim from 2003 to 2007. Comedy Central had been the series’ home since 2009.
Besides the core cast of Billy West, Katey Sagal, John DiMaggio, Lauren Tom and Phil LaMar, Futurama had a list of pretty impressive guest stars over its series run, such as:
- Al Gore
- The Original Star Trek surviving cast (William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, Walter Koenig, George Takei and Nichelle Nichols)
- Stephen Hawkings
- Penn Jillette
- Snoop Dogg
- Jonathan Frakes
- Patrick Stewart
- Seth McFarlane
- Lucy Liu
- Sigourney Weaver and others.
Futurama was a fun and smart TV show that made the viewer feel that he was part of the inside jokes that flowed a mile a minute. It’s a program that will be missed from my weekly viewing schedule; but fortunately, it is available on Netflix, so I’ll never be far from it’s joy.
