In a move very reminiscent of those of Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon has removed the remaining Book 3 episodes of Avatar: The Legend of Korra from its network scheduling. However, both Nickelodeon and co-creator, Bryan Konietzko, stressed that Korra was not cancelled, but rather moved [emphasis mine] to a digital format. The July 25th episode was the last episode to air on Nickelodeon.
Starting August 1, weekly episodes of the saga will be available on Nick.com and streaming services like Amazon, Hulu and Google Play. Ratings for the current series, Book 3, have been half of Book 2 which was two-thirds of season one’s ratings. The decline in ratings would explain a cancellation of the series IF everyone agreed that the series was indeed cancelled. However, everyone who should know insists that this move is not cancellation.
But I’m afraid I disagree. Moving the series to the Nick website means the show will no longer be advertised on the TV network. It also means there will be no demand or reason for Nickelodeon to request Book Four of the series since the network doesn’t intend to air it. This is a sad ending to the Avatar franchise and I, for one, will be sad to see the series depart. Season two showed how good the series could be, but as I said last October, ratings are a truth teller and the current ratings for Avatar: Legend of Korra tells a tale that lovers of the show don’t want to hear.
Bah! This makes me sad, mostly because you’re on the money…
