In Defense of Newspapers

A friend of mine and I had a discussion some time ago as to the need for newspapers.  Honestly, in this age of instant communications, it is hard to defend the newspaper. The one delivered to my door this morning at 5AM was printed around midnight. So the news is at least 5 hours old when it gets to my hands.

When I was a child, we actually had a class in the third grade about how to read (and fold) a newspaper.  The point of the class was to teach the child how to read a newspaper on a bus without disturbing the passenger next to you. I know that it seems like a pointless class now in light of handheld devices, but at the time it was part of the mythos of the well-educated citizen soldier of the late 50’s & early 60’s.

So my point? In my paper today, I read 2 1/2 pages of comics. But if you get your daily comic fix from comic.com, you have not read the comics for almost three days because their site crashed (big time).  But if you’re having electronic comic withdrawals, you can get your comics fix here, at United Features.

I think today as a way to celebrate, I’ll check the ads in today’s newspaper or maybe I’ll re-read 9 Chickweed Lane.  Or maybe I’ll just read yesterday’s line scores in the Sport Section of my paper because today the newspapers scored a small victory in the war they are very likely to lose simply by being available.

betcha still use the phone book too, eh???

  2. Honestly? As a matter of fact, I do whenever I need a specialized service like a plumber or electrican, but I get your point. Fortunately, my cell phone has a “yellow pages” app in it that may replace the big book for me someday. I would have been completely lost on my Albuquerque trip without it.
