It was recently announced that Academy Award winner, Ben Affleck is going to be the new Batman in the upcoming Zack Snyder movie, Batman vs. Superman. Most of the Internet lit up like a cheap roman candle on the news that Affleck was the new “Dark Knight.” Let’s face facts. Ben Affleck has been in some horrible movies, but I don’t have a problem with him being Batman at all.
I am more concerned with who will be writing the script and who will be directing the movie. You see, for the Batman franchise, it doesn’t matter who wears the cowl (George Clooney, Val Kilmer and Christian Bale are proof of that). The only thing that matters is the story and the directing.
Twenty-five years ago, Warner Brothers casted comedian Michael Keaton, fresh off of his hit comedy, Beetlejuice as Batman. Fandom went ballistic at the casting news. Yet, Keaton’s portrayal of Batman (and Bruce Wayne) in two movies set the standard for every actor who has worn the suit since. But the real reason Keaton’s portrayal of Batman is right on is because of two very good stories by Sam Hamm and consistent direction by Tim Burton.
The screenplay for Batman vs. Superman is being written by David S. Goyer. The question will be which Goyer product will we get: one like The Dark Knight or one like Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance. With Snyder being the director which movie we get is a toss-up. We will either get a movie like 300 or we will get another 3-hour, Watchmen or the horrible, Sucker Punch (which left viewers feeling gut punched).
I wish Ben Affleck lots of luck as the new Batman, but I wish us moviegoers more luck in getting a good story and good direction from David Goyer and Zack Snyder.
