iCarly’s Series Finale “iGoodbye” Airs Next Month

Next month, after 109 episodes, the Nickelodeon hit TV series, iCarly comes to an end.  This program has been the longest running, live action, non-sketch comedy Nickelodeon has ever broadcasted.  And it has been one of the network’s highest rated programs.

The Dan Schneider produced show is about three high school kids who have a popular weekly webcast. The show ‘within a show’ is hosted by Carly Shea (Miranda Cosgrove) and her friend and sidekick, Sam Puckett (Jennette McCurdy). The web show is produced by their friend, Freddie Benson (Nathan Kress). The cast also includes Jerry Trainor as Carly’s brother, Spencer and Noah Munck as Gibby Gibson.

As I mentioned last year, lines have been drawn in the ‘shipper’ battles for iCarly. Those who see Carly and Freddie together are called “Creddie;” while those who prefer Sam and Freddie are called “Seddie.” There is no word on how or if these shipper battles will be resolved in the finale. My guess is that the question will remain unanswered despite Schneider commenting on his blog that he is aware of both groups.

That said, the writing on this show has been smart which has made the show enjoyable for adults as well as the intended ‘Tween’ audience. But, as with most kids shows, the child actors don’t stay children forever. It is harder for this group of 19 & 20-year-old cast members to believably play young high school kids. So, Schneider is doing the right thing in having the characters move on toward graduation and college, thus ending the show.   But he is also giving himself a way to bring these characters back as well. Two iCarly characters, Sam Puckett and Gibby Gibson will have their own respective spin-off shows: Sam & Cat and Gibby.

iCarly has been a joy to watch with my grandkids and I, for one, will miss this show.
