On July 13 (while this blog was on hiatus), with relatively little notice or fanfare, Ginny Tyler passed away at the age of 86. Most of us don’t give voice actors much thought, but Miss Tyler was one of the better ones.
Tyler was the head storyteller for Disney during the 1960s. Her voice could be heard on the vinyl records that parents purchased for their kids telling the story of Bambi, Lady & the Tramp, Babes in Toyland, Hans Brinker and Mother Goose. In 1963 she portrayed two amorous female squirrels in the animated Disney movie, The Sword in the Stone. She was also the voice of Casper, the Friendly Ghost in the 1963 TV series and was the voice of Jan in Space Ghost. In the seventies she voiced Sue Richards of the Fantastic Four in the short-lived animated TV series. She was also all of the female characters in the first 13 episodes of Davy and Goliath.
Voice acting takes talent, a talent not too many actors have. Many times an actor or actress has to read from a script without any visual clues as to what is going on in that scene other than the direction that is given by the voice director. Frequently, they are the only actor in the studio when they do their voice recordings which makes the work even more challenging. Ms. Tyler was very good at what she did as evidenced by the short scene below from Disney’s The Sword in the Stone. (I’m not permitted to embed this video, so the link is provided).
