Earlier this week, the Disney movie, Frozen, won the Academy Award for the Best Animated Feature and for the Best Original Song. The award-winning song, Let It Go, has been parodied across the Internet. Some of the song parodies have been very, very good (and funny) and a couple have been, frankly, horrible.
However, first things first – the song, Let It Go, is a very difficult song to sing and will definitely test a soprano’s vocal range. (In fact, one of the parodies below is an Alto trying to sing the song.) But this song of personal empowerment and self-acceptance is sung at a key moment in the film and sets up the events in the film’s climax as the two sisters, Elsa and Anna, struggle to save each other and their kingdom. So that you have a frame of reference, here is a link to the song, Let It Go from the movie Frozen as performed by Idina Menzel.
Please note that some of the below videos may not play on mobile devices. That is probably more related to Disney copyright issues and not from the videos themselves. That said, I apologize in advance for the ear-worm you are about to get – and you will get one.
1. Make It So – The very talent team of Debs & Errol took the song and made a wonderful piece based on the movie, Star Trek: First Contact. If you haven’t seen the movie or have forgotten it, this video in three and half minutes will bring it all back (and help you realize how bad the film was).
2. It Is Cold – From Josh Jackson come a video that expresses how I have felt about the weather this winter. Sung by Faith Liu, this video made me smile because frankly, cold is not, and never has been my friend.
3. Here I Go (Despair of an Alto) – This is one of the funniest videos I came across because it highlights the problem of all Disney “Princess Songs” – no one other than the original artist can sing them comfortably. The author, Serena, effectively makes her case for Disney tunes in her voice range. Be warned – the vocals on this video are NSFW, but it will make you smile.
4. Just Don’t Go – Finally, from Cincinnati’ s WKRC (TV Channel 12) comes a brilliantly well done parody from local TV personality, Bob Herzog. The moral here in this surprising viral video is listen to the weatherman because he’s probably right.
Don’t hesitate to let me know if you come across any other parodies of note, you’d think I should know about.
