Friday Morning Guilty Pleasures–Revisited

Back in June 2011, I mentioned four comics I enjoy each morning. Two years later, I thought it would be interesting to look back on those comics and get a “status report.”

Multiplex1Multiplex and South Park – These two sites have not changed much over the last 2 years. They are both still funny and poignant. Multiplex smartly captures the inner workings of a movie theater while remaining topical concerning movies in current release and South Park is…well…South Park.

Cul de Sac – National Cartoonist Society 2011 “Cartoonist of the Year,” Richard Thompson’s Cul de Sac, is a comic strip about the life of a pre-school girl named Alice Otterloop. However, in April 2012, Thompson was diagnosed with Parkinson disease and it left him unable to draw the strip. Despite adding illustrator, Stacey Curtis, in an effort to continue the awarding winning comic, the syndicate Universal Uclick announced that the strip would end on 23 September 2012. The strip is in reruns now and no longer on my RSS feeds. But if you haven’t read this strip, it’s still worth putting on your short list.

Les and May – ceased publishing in March 2013. Larry Lewis’ light-hearted look at a retired married couple struck a personal chord with me and is missed.

Out There – The strip is still about “…a pretty bartender named Miriam who’s lived her life a certain way, decided it’s probably not the best way, and is now trying to figure out a different way. But not too different.” This adult oriented, but PG-13 rated strip by R. C. Monroe remains an acquired taste. but is more than worth the trouble in following the extensive cast because the story lines are segmented and move along at a nice brisk pace. The strip now updates weekly vice daily, but it remains a welcome read.

The still functioning sites are a joy to visit and just might make your day as well.
