Whenever someone describes a movie as “quirky,” your radar should go off immediately because that word is generally used to describe bad movies. However, quirky is the best word I can use to describe the very funny and whimsical movie that is The Fairy.
This French film will remind you of the comedies of Billy Wilder and Stanley Kramer. It is poignant and sometimes laugh out loud funny. This movie was directed by its stars, Dominique Abel and Fiona Gordon. I mention that because it is very clear that Abel and Gordon have great chemistry on-screen and behind the camera.
The Fairy tells the story of a hotel clerk who searches all over Le Havre for the fairy who made two of his three wishes come true before disappearing. As we follow the hotel clerk (Dominique Abel) around, we encounter mental hospital inpatients and staff, a female rugby team, African asylum seekers and the French police. This is an escapist movie at it best and just plain strange at its worse. But it was enjoyable and even worth watching a second time. It’s streaming on both Netflix and Amazon.
