Dragon Prince is Superb Television

The second season of Dragon Prince started on February 15, 2019 and was well worth the wait. If you were a fan of the Nickelodeon series, Avatar: the Last Airbender, you will love this program.

dragon-princeIt is written and produced by Aaron Ehasz who was the series director and head writer for the first Avatar series and that is one of the first things you’ll notice about Dragon Prince. It visually looks and feels like a continuation of Avatar. It’s not, of course, but if you were a fan of Avatar, you’ll feel at home in Dragon Prince. It flows almost seamlessly from one episode to another. The storytelling is spellbinding and will draw you into the series whether or not you think this is your cup of tea.

Dragon Prince tells the story of a world where humans and elves are in conflict. Long ago, humans killed the dragon king and his egg; thereby laying the groundwork for a war.  The elves attempt to assassinate the human king Harrow and his heir, the young prince Ezran in retaliation. One of the elves, a young assassin named Rayla, along with Ezran and his older half-brother Callum, discover that the dragon king’s egg wasn’t destroyed, but was, in fact, stolen. Together the three seek to return the egg to the dragons to prevent war. But the mage Viren, King Harrow’s advisor and friend, is intent on war and seizes power after the king dies in the assassination attempt. He and his children Claudia and Soren want to stop Ezran, Rayla and Callum from accomplishing their peace mission.

Just a word about the voice acting – it is amazing. Paula Barrow’s Rayla (the elf assassin) will remind you of Kelly Macdonald’s Merida (from Brave) and it’s perfect for the character. Callum is voiced by Jack De Sena who voice Sooka in the original Avatar series. While voices tell the story, writing shapes the characters and the characters in Dragon Prince don’t come to us fully formed and perfect. We watch them grow and develop. We watch them cast aside old beliefs or become more entrenched in destructive ones. We watch relationships form and die and reform.  We watch the young Princes learn what it means to be a King.

Bottom line – do I like this on-going series? Yes I do…quite a bit and I think you will too. It’s currently streaming on Netflix and is worth binge watching.
