This comes via twentytwowords.com. For some reason yesterday, the song Jolene, written and sung by Dolly Parton popped in my head and stayed there like a tiny, non-removeable splinter all day. If you’re not familiar with the song, it is ranked #219 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of “the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.” Jolene tells the story of a woman confronting another woman and begging her “not to take her man just because she can.” While the song has been covered by many artists over the years, Ms. Parton’s version (IMHO) remains the best.
Last year, YouTube contributor, goodlittlebuddy, took Dolly Parton’s version on a 45 rpm record and slowed it down to 33 rpm. The result is a fantastic rendition of the song in which Ms. Parton sounds an awful lot like Neil Young to me. That version is below:
Not to be outdone, YouTube contributor, xFlloyd, then combined the Parton original version with the slower version so that Dolly is now singing harmony with herself.
It’s an interesting effect and one I enjoyed quite a bit. To me, if Neil Young and Dolly Parton sang a duet of Jolene, this is what it would sound like (and it would be awesome). What do you think?
