There is very little doubt that the worse TV show on the air right now is Cartoon Network’s Teen Titans Go! And it looks like Disney’s Marvel’s Avengers Assemble is poised to show exactly how bad the Teen Titans fare is.
On May 26, Disney XD will preview its new Avengers’ offering. The program will premiere on the network on July 7 as part of its Marvel Universe programming. Marvel’s Avengers Assemble reunites the most popular super hero team — Iron Man, Hulk, Captain America, Thor, Hawkeye and Black Widow, along with newcomer Falcon, marking the first time in animation history this particular team of heroes will join forces.
The addition of Falcon to the team is a pleasant surprise. The movie, Captain America: The Winter Soldier is scheduled to introduce the Falcon to the world in 2014. So, this animated series will be ahead of the movie franchise and could lead to the appearance of the Falcon in the second Avengers film scheduled for release in 2015. This new animated team is led by Iron Man. You won’t get much of an argument from me if you’re old school enough to think the team should be led by Captain America, since Tony Stark was never much of a team player.
Like any other animated program, the storytelling is more important than anything else. I haven’t been able to find out much yet on the series writing staff, but I will continue to look because to me the “telling is more important than the showing” (and Teen Titans Go is proof of that). But, regardless of who is writing, it is clear that Disney wants to tap viewers who were fans of the XD series: Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and reach new fans who were fans of the movie. I hope they succeed because Teen Titans Go is such a horrible disappointment and I desperately need a replacement for Young Justice. I hope Marvel’s Avengers Assemble is just what the doctor ordered.
