SONGFIC - LEGACY
The evening sky was getting dark and there was a cool breeze blowing from the south. The bluff was green, grassy and dry. It gave them a wondrous view. From here he could see the cityscape in the distance as the river flowing below reflected the little remaining light of the set sun and the rising moon.
(When I am down, and oh my soul's so weary
When troubles come and my heart burdened be.)
This was their favorite spot. She would often talk about coming here and finding him sitting on the grass and watching the sunset. And she said she would sometimes sit next to him and hold his hand. Yes, this was his favorite spot. They both knew that.
(Then I am still and wait here in the silence
Until you come and sit a while with me.)
The two were finally alone. It had been a long day for both of them. He knew that she didn't want to wear a veil. It was a human custom that reminded her of another life.
But she'd said that she couldn't trust herself not to cry in public. She had been crying in private for days and he didn't know what to do to console her. He was troubled because he couldn't remember actually ever seeing her cry. Her very visible heartbreak and her tears added to his tremendous grief.
It was so strange to see her in a veil. She'd once said she would never wear a mask again because a mask hides and she wasn't going to hide anything anymore.
But the veil couldn't hide the tears that fell freely- from both of them. He had never seen her like this. She had always been strong but he had to help her stand at the public memorial service. He was so afraid that this strong woman would not make through the day.
(You raise up so I can stand on mountains,
You raise me up to walk on stormy seas,)
He was relieved that she was more composed during the private service attended by the remaining original members. And he was delighted that she could share a laugh with the Flash.
(I am strong when I am on your shoulders,
You raise me up to more than I can be.)
Now the two were alone overlooking the bluff where a long time ago his dad told his mom he'd give his life for her.
She removed her veil and tossed it into the river below. The young man offered her a handkerchief but she wouldn't take it. He looked at the small woman next to him and he was suddenly aware of how much she had seemed to age in the last few days and how frail she now looked. Her green eyes were red from crying and her reddish hair now seemed grayer. He gently kissed her on the top of her head, just as he'd seen his dad do many times before. He whispered, "Are you going to be okay?"
She sighed loudly and then looked up into his face. She smiled weakly as she nodded, "Eventually." Then she sniffled and wiped a tear away with her finger. "Remember what he used to say whenever times got difficult...whenever we were sad?"
The young man put his arms around her and tenderly squeezed her shoulders. Swallowing hard he said softly, "I remember, mom."
She grabbed the hand that was on her shoulder and used it as a brace as she gingerly sat down on the grass. "That's what I'm going to do, Rex. And just like John said it's going to be okay."
He knelt down next to her and gently rubbed her back, as she looked off at the city in distance and murmured, "Yes, I'm going to plant my feet and I'm going to be okay."
