Adult Swim on Cartoon Network has started replaying, what I consider one of the best anime series ever, Blood+.
This is a coming of age story about a “teenage” girl named Saya who comes to grips with her vampire family and her destiny. I say “teenage” because Saya is really more than a 150 years old and she “sleeps” 30 years at a time remaining “awake” for about two years. When she awakens her faithful servant/lover, Hagi, is there to guide and ground her. Saya prefers the company of women and that is made very clear from the first episode, but she and Hagi have a bond that is the love story of the series.
I want to be clear about one thing. Thankfully, Blood+ is no Twilight. It is the follow up story to Blood – The Last Vampire, except it is easier to care about Saya and her family than it was to care about the vampire in B-TLV. Blood+ is dark, very violent and bloody, sexy and extremely well told. The musical soundtrack by Mark Mancina, produced by the great Hans Zimmer, is brilliant.
Last year, Sony released the first 25 episodes of this series. Amazon sells this box set for $99.99. The last 25 episodes will go on sale on October 20th for about $90.00. So you can get all fifty episodes for $189.99 from Amazon or you can set your DVR to record all 50 on Adult Swim and have the complete set about this time next year. The choice is yours, but whatever you decide, you should get this series. You will not be sorry.
