Star Wars Rebels to End March 5, 2018

Disney confirmed on 19 January 2018, that they will air the final episodes of Star Wars Rebels starting on February 19, with the series finale airing on March 5, 2018. This is good news because it tells this Rebels’ fan that Disney is serious about doing justice to the total Star Wars story.

Star Wars Rebels tells the story of the rebel rebellion against the Empire from the view of Homecoming_Rebels_11the rebel fighters. Led by former Starship Pilot, Hera Syndulla (voiced by Vanessa Marshall), the rebel crew consisting of former Jedi Knight, Kanan Jarrus (Freddie Prinze, Jr.), former bounty hunter, Sabine Wren (Tiya Sircar), former Royal Palace guard Garazeb “Zeb” Orrelios (Steven Blum) and former thief, Ezra Bridger (Taylor Gray), make up the crew of the ship, Ghost.

When the show started I thought that this series was about the hero’s journey of Ezra Bridger, but as it concludes I’m now convinced it is about the one character we know survives to Return of the Jedi, General Hera Syndulla.  (Spoiler Alert: In Rogue One, Hera, who didn’t appear on screen, was summoned to the briefing room over the intercom at Yavin 4.  In Disney’s Star Wars Force of Destiny series, after RotJ, Hera and her ship provides supplies to Han Solo after the Battle of Endor.)

Star Wars Rebels is a series we knew was going to end, but that doesn’t minimize our sadness. That said, I hope the finale rewards us with closure on the character relationships we’ve come to love (Hera/Kanan & Sabine/Ezra). The storytelling has been outstanding so far and I’ve no reason to believe that these final episodes will be any different. The trailer for the final episodes is below.
