Steven Universe in Space–A Review

Steven Universe in Space–A Review

I recognize that this is probably a minority opinion, but I think the recently aired Steven Universe in Space Arc was well worth the wait and imparted a ton of new information to the viewers. The episodes: Steven’s Dream, Adventures in Light Distortion, Gem Heist, The Zoo and That Will Be All told us a lot about Steven, the Diamonds and Gem Home World.

Spoilers Ahead – (Last chance to bail out before it gets spoiled.)

Steven has been pretty messed up since he found out that his mother, Rose Quartz who he idolized, shattered (murdered) her leader, Pink Diamond more than 5,000 years ago. No one will tell him the details of this affair, but it is clear that recalling it is painful for all of the Crystal Gems. Furious that the Gems won’t help him learn the truth, he sets out on his own with his dad, Greg, to South Korea to investigate Pink Diamond’s palanquin despite pleadings from Garnet not to go.

The fact that Garnet was afraid and begging Steven not to embark on this quest should have told Steven how dangerous it was for all concerned.  It’s easy to forget that all of the Gems are under a death sentence for their part in the rebellion. Steven has grown up with this Blue Diamond and Gregknowledge, but chooses to ignore Garnet’s warning to his detriment.

Greg and Steven find the palanquin, but they also find Blue Diamond at the site crying. It turns out that this was the spot where Rose shattered Pink Diamond and Blue still mourns her loss like a sister. Greg is detected by Blue Diamond and her Pearl and ironically shares a sympathetic moment with her as he discusses his loss of Rose Quartz without mentioning her by name. Blue Diamond is touched by Greg’s compassion and, believing that the Geo-weapon is still active, decides to save him by kidnapping him to space.

Steven is unable to prevent Blue Diamond from taking Greg. As Blue Diamond’s ship disappears, Garnet appears and tells Steven she foresaw all of this happening and her fear of Blue Diamond kept her from going with him. But she tells him that they will go into space to find Greg and bring him back. Pearl surmises that Greg, if he is still alive, is being held at Pink Diamond’s Zoo for human captives. So the Gems set off after him.

Over the remaining episodes of this arc, we watch Steven realize that he and he alone is responsible for what happens to the Gems because he pushed them into “making stupid mistakes” and getting his father kidnapped. We also see that Steven really loves his Dad and values his relationship with him. Garnet tells him not to be so hard on himGreg and Steven overhear Blue and Yellow Diamond self because he didn’t kidnap Greg – Blue Diamond did, but Steven knows his impatience put them all at risk.

It’s of note, that after Greg and Steven escape the Zoo, they both overhear a discussion between Blue and Yellow Diamond. It takes place in a chamber belonging to the shattered Pink Diamond. Inside this chamber are thousands of bubbled red quartz gems just like Steven and his mother, Rose. These quartz gems were warriors, like Rose, in service to Pink Diamond. They were probably bubbled after Rose shattered Pink. Yellow Diamond is angry that Blue Diamond  hasn’t destroyed those gems yet. She’s also angry that Blue’s continued mourning for Pink has compromised her ability to lead.

So what did we learn? This arc was about family. Steven and the Gems going to extremes to ensure their family (including Greg) remained in tact at the risk of their own individual safety. We learned that Blue Diamond is still emotionally distraught 5,000 Amethyst and familyyears later after the lost of Pink Diamond. We learned that the Diamonds don’t know that the Geo-weapon has been disarmed thanks to Peridot and Steven. We learned that all of the amethyst guards at the Zoo are just like our Amethyst. It was great to know that Amethyst, who has never seen the Gem Home World and considered herself “flawed” met others who were just like her and considered her family. We also learned that Blue Diamond didn’t remember Sapphire or Ruby (The Answer), but they sure remember her and Sapphire had a hard time hiding her fear. Finally, we learned that Pearl was in service to a very high-ranking Gem before the rebellion (my personal guess is White Diamond) and we see how far she’s come as a person since joining  Rose’s rebels.

This arc showed us the Crystal Gems as we’ve not seen them before and it was well worth the wait. Steven Universe can be seen on Cartoon Network.
