The End of Star Wars Rebels

The End of Star Wars Rebels

It was announced during this past Saturday’s Star Wars Celebration panel that the upcoming 4th season of Star Wars Rebels will be its last. As a Rebels fan, this was sad news indeed, but it was not unexpected.

Star Wars Rebels tells the story of the rebel rebellion against the Empire from the standpoint of Homecoming_Rebels_11the rebel fighters. Led by former Star Pilot, Hera Syndulla (voiced by Vanessa Marshall), the rebel crew consisting of former Jedi Knight, Kanan Jarrus (Freddie Prinze, Jr.), former bounty hunter, Sabine Wren (Tiya Sircar), former Royal Palace guard Garazeb “Zeb” Orrelios (Steven Blum) and former thief, Ezra Bridger (Taylor Gray), the crew of the ship, Ghost, is determined to get the job done.

The writing of this series has been very good in its world building and character development. Every one of the Rebels has a back-story that reflects how they were negatively impacted by the formation of the Empire, the Emperor or Darth Vader.  Stuck between the end of Episode III (Revenge of the Sith) and Episode IV ( A New Hope), Star Wars Rebels was always going to be limited in the stories it could tell. But the ones it told were always very well done even when we, the audience, knew that very few of the rebels could be expected to make it to the end of the series.

With the end of the series announced so far in advance, the producers have an exceptional opportunity to clean-up the inter-character relationships (Hera/Kanan & Sabine/Ezra) and possibly introduce characters seen in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

The Star Wars Saga is the story of the Skywalker family. Star Wars Rebels is the story of those affected by the actions of that family. The trailer for the final season is below.
