Faith (The Great Doctor) is the Great Drama

Hiding in your Netflix queue, should be an awesome 24 episode offering from South Korea entitled, Faith aka The Great Doctor. It’s a love story, it’s a time travel story, it’s a mock historical drama and it’s darn good.

Faith-the-great-doctorA warrior General named Choi Young from the Korean Goryeo dynasty (918-1392 A.D.) travels to the year 2012 to find a “great doctor” to save his King’s bride who has been attacked by assassins. He finds at a medical convention, plastic surgeon, Doctor Yoo Eun-Soo, who is addressing a large audience in a seminar. From this, he believes her to be the great doctor he was sent to find. He kidnaps her and they travel 700 years into the past where she becomes the doctor to the royal family. The General and the Doctor tell a compelling love story that transcends time and space.

It is hard to say more about this series without giving the whole thing away. Yet, this show is such compelling drama that minor plot holes that do appear are easily forgiven by the viewer. It has a powerful musical soundtrack that will haunt you. It is beautifully photographed and each scene is a monument to its director, Kim Jong-hak, who committed suicide after this production was completed. But the tale he left behind is a fascinating one and a huge part of his legacy.
