The End of Cathy

Cathy by Cathy GuisewiteToday is the last day of the comic strip, Cathy, by Cathy Guisewite.  Ms. Guisewite concludes her award winning comic with little fanfare after more than 34 years.  The comic character mirrored much of Ms. Guisewite’s own life in search of personal and professional fulfillment.  The comic ending wasn’t as thoughtful, in my opinion, as Calvin and Hobbs nor as satisfying as Opus, but the ending was more than appropriate for Cathy.

As she leaves the public stage, Ms. Guisewite should take pleasure in knowing that her comic was groundbreaking.  Rina Piccolo of Six Chix and Tina’s Groove said it best, “With her comic strip ‘Cathy,’ Cathy Guisewite helped pave the way for a new generation of  women cartoonist on the newspaper comics page. For that I salute her!”

Cathy Guisewite contributed to the American conversation in the same vein and manner as Charles Schultz. For that I salute her as well and as Cathy would say, “AACK!!”
