The Good, the Bad, the Weird–A Movie Review

What happens when you combine Indiana Jones, the “Man with No Name,” an homage to Sergio Leone and the Manchurian desert? You get a brilliant South Korean film that is thin on plot, but loaded with action and great fun to watch. The film is The Good, the Bad, the Weird and its streaming on Netflix and available from Amazon.

good-the-bad-the-weird-poster1 This film, set in the 1930’s during the Japanese occupation of Manchuria, involves everyone, and I mean everyone from the Chinese Army, the Japanese Army, the Korean Independence Underground, gangsters and train robbers, looking for a treasure map of untold riches. It is a great combination of action, comedy and drama with a terrific musical soundtrack. But most importantly, it pay homage to the work of Sergio Leone without blatantly ripping him off.

This Korean western set in 20th century Asia works because of a great cast who don’t take themselves too seriously. The story is easy to follow, but it is violent, as in Tarantino violent. Let’s face facts, this movie is not “Lincoln,” but it is not shallow either. It has the energy of “Raiders of the Lost Ark” and the choreography of Chocolate. This is a fun film with a great ending. The movie trailer is below. Put this film on your short list.
